High School Curriculum
Future Readiness
At Paul, we don’t teach our scholars to graduate high school. We teach them to be fully prepared to excel in college—or in whatever other kind of extraordinary future they choose to pursue. Our curriculum is designed to pique curiosity, expand thinking, and challenge every scholar to consider the diverse world on which they will leave a lasting impression.
Highlighted Courses
At PIHS, we offer a rigorous, yet rewarding curriculum that equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in a global society. Some of these courses include:
In addition to our core curriculum, we offer nine AP courses, mandatory SAT prep, and continuous guidance to students on their next steps after high school. Many of our PIHS Scholars participate in dual enrollment opportunities through Paul’s partnership with local universities and programs.
Grading
The Paul PCS grading system is designed to provide students with clear feedback and guidance for areas of growth. Our grading scale is as follows:
To graduate, students must meet a minimum of 24 credits that consist of the core classes: English, Math, Science, andHistory, as well as electives. Additionally, 100 hours of community service are required.
For more information about grading and graduation eligibility, please reach out to Paul PIHS Principal, Stephanie Hawkins, by emailing shawkins@paulcharter.org.
College and Career Preparation
As Malcom X once said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Our students have access to college and financial aid application help, career development services, and other resources for post-secondary success. We have a full team of dedicated counselors who work tirelessly to ensure our students have the proper guidance.
To get a jumpstart on college, many PIHS Scholars from the 10th-12th grade participate in dual enrollment opportunities through our partnership with the University of the District of Columbia and the OSSE Scholars Program which connects students with top-tier universities across the country.

DC CAPE Exams
DC CAPE (Comprehensive Assessments of Progress in Education) is an annual exam that assesses student performance to identify areas for additional support. Developed by experts to meet Common Core standards, CAPE measures progress for students in grades 3-11. At Paul, scholars in grades 6-11 will take the exam. Preparation for the CAPE exam takes place on SMART Saturdays at our in-person Saturday Academy.
